A generational fund in the making
Nestled in the heart of South Canterbury, the charming towns of Temuka and Winchester embody the spirit of New Zealand's close-knit communities. Both are steeped in history and offer a unique blend of rural charm and vibrant local life. Temuka, renowned for its iconic pottery and welcoming atmosphere, serves as a hub for artisans and small businesses. Meanwhile, Winchester holds a strong connection to the region's rural and farming heritage, serving as a gateway to South Canterbury’s agricultural heartland. Its proximity to the iconic Clandeboye Dairy Factory highlights its role in supporting one of New Zealand’s key industries, contributing to both local employment and global exports.
These towns foster a sense of belonging that attracts both residents and visitors alike. They thrive on the dedication and generosity of their people, yet like many rural areas, they face challenges in sustaining their growth and preserving their heritage. Establishing an ongoing community fund for Temuka and Winchester is not just an investment in the towns themselves but in the well-being of their residents. Such a fund could support vital projects like maintaining local parks, enhancing public facilities, and fostering initiatives that attract new opportunities.
Michelle and Leighton Pye, owners of Pye Group, have established the Temuka Area Community Fund to support the community they love and call home. Deeply committed to the region’s future, this community-minded couple took a transformative step to ensure ongoing support for Temuka and Winchester.
This fund was made possible through the sale of the primary asset of The Winchester Charitable Trust, a private foundation the Pyes founded in 2016. Recognizing the challenges often faced by private charitable trusts—such as administrative demands and distribution costs—the Pyes chose to wind down the trust and contribute $250,000 to the Aoraki Foundation. This significant gift marks the beginning of a sustainable impact fund dedicated to their community.
As Michelle explains, “It was unlikely others would contribute to our private trust, but now that this fund is managed by the Aoraki Foundation, we hope it will inspire locals passionate about the Temuka/Winchester area to also make gifts, growing this fund for the future.”
By joining Michelle and Leighton in supporting this community fund, individuals and businesses can help create a legacy of shared prosperity. Together, we can ensure that Temuka and Winchester remain resilient, vibrant, and full of opportunities for generations to come.
