A family that values education.
The O’Sullivan family values education. This began with William (Dermott) O’Sullivan who, after his secondary school years at St Bede’s College, attended Lincoln College (as it was then) for three years; gaining a DipAg and DipVFM, graduating in 1973. All four of Dermott’s sons, Ryan, Brett, Tim, and Chris followed in their father’s footsteps by studying at Lincoln University. The education and grounding that Lincoln University provided the family has led to interests in farms and businesses across South Canterbury.
In 2024, Dermott established a scholarship for Lincoln to recognise the contribution the University has played in his success and that of his family. Wanting to give something back, they are supporting a student, with a connection to South Canterbury, who is enrolled in an agricultural degree at Lincoln. There is a strong preference for a Bachelor of Land and Property Management degree (BLPM) with a rural valuation focus. Dermott believes getting more BLPM qualified graduates not only addresses the shortage of rural valuers in New Zealand but is also a good all-round qualification that would open many doors in the agricultural industry.
