An area so special it must be proteceted
Expansive golden grasslands, snow capped mountains, vivid turquoise lakes, and awe-inspiring night skies, the Mackenzie basin is a special part of the world.
Worth protecting? That is what a collection of stakeholders believed when they got together back in 2010 for the Mackenzie Country Symposium. This was the genesis of the Mackenzie Agreement, a shared vision developed by farmers, environmentalists, tourism operators, businesses, the Crown, and local government. This vision recognised the Mackenzie Country as an iconic area and there was a shared responsibility for restoring and maintaining its natural assets.
In February 2016, the Mackenzie Country Trust was established with the purpose to uphold the vision of the Mackenzie Agreement. A strategic framework was put in place and the Trust went about their work. However, the funding that had been expected from the Crown did not materialise, which severely restricted the ability of the Trust to negotiate with farmers over teh protection and management of the land.
In 2024 The Mackenzie Country Trust made the decision to wind down and establish the Mackenzie Country Conservation Fund. This new fund will carry on the purpose of the Trust in line with the Mackenzie Agreement.
Annual income from the capital within the Fund will be used to promote, protect, and enhance the natural landscape and ecological values of the Mackenzie Basin. This may be in the form of grants made to organisations that are already involved in conservation protection in the Mackenzie Basin. It may also be funding new initiatives that benefit the region or collaborating on ecological projects with partners, farmers, and tourism operators.

Can I get a grant?
This fund does not have a contestable grant round, however we can register environmental projects the fund may be able to support with a grant. The first point of contact should be an email to the Aoraki Foundation with a brief explanation of the project or opportunity.
